These three activity stages are the building blocks of the Smart Start Reader program. They incorporate before reading activities to prepare the student for reading the book; such as previewing, predicting, setting a purpose, and making a plan. During reading activities to encourage active reading techniques; such as completing graphic organizers, open response questions and multiple choice questions. And after reading activities to teach students how to reference their completed reading journal to reflect, summarize, and evaluate the book.
